Every job, whether its a new single family home or a kitchen remodel, requires specifications.  This is typically called the "job specification" or "specs" for short.  

Without a good set of specs for the job, things are going to go very wrong.  The typical problems that result from poor specs are material shortages, install mistakes, poor quality installation and damage to the interior.  Most of these types of mistakes are preventable.

The job specs are a combination of material, industry standards, builder requirements and worker knowledge.  First, what are the specifications required by the material you're using?  If your'e installing an interior door, for example, what's the door opening size?  What is the size of the door?  Is it a left or right swing?  What trim is to be used and how is it to be installed?  What hardware is required?
